Filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee's "The Best Man: Unfinished Business" Debuts This Summer
Everyone remain calm!
When Malcolm D. Lee’s The Best Man premiered October 22, 1999, I vividly remembered how excited my mom was to watch it. It became one of the most-watched VHS tapes in her classic stash and has earned a permanent spot in my heart.
Being introduced to Lance Sullivan (Morris Chestnut), Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs), Jordan Armstrong (Nia Long), Candace (Regina Hall), Quentin Spivey (Terrence Howard), Julian Murch (Harold Perrineau) and Shelby (Melissa de Sousa) was such a treat for a little girl whose imaginations about adult friendships felt conceptualized on-screen.
Even though fans were given the subsequent The Best Man Holiday in 2013 and The Best Man: The Final Chapters in 2022, it still felt like this group of friends story was unfinished.
It seems like Malcolm D. Lee heard everyone’s requests because his book The Best Man: Unfinished Business hits shelves July 1, 2025! Written with Jayne Allen, it’s going to pick up after the events of The Best Man: Final Chapters (now streaming on Peacock) and promises to answers questions that were left unanswered.
Book Plot
Harper Stewart’s career may be flourishing, but he finds himself stuck at crossroads when he’s unable to find the inspiration for his next project. Then there’s the fiery, yet soft-hearted Jordan Armstrong and her desire to get away from it all. Facing burnout, she thinks the answer to her problems is to leave hustle culture behind for a breezy lifestyle. But there’s still one thing missing…
On the other side of the world is Harper’s ex-wife Robyn and their daughter Mia. Deciding that life’s better in Ghana, Robyn continues to find success by spearheading her own restaurant and even entertains the idea of a sexy stranger’s attention. But, she doesn’t count on the fact Mia will reach out to her dad when things hit the fan.
Boundaries will be tested and old wounds may reopen, but we can count on Harper, Robyn, Jordan, Quentin, Shelby, Lance, Murch and Candace to balance it with love, laughter, and understanding that comes with time.
Ironically, Harper penned a salacious book titled Unfinished Business that fractured his friendship with Lance for a while. Luckily, the friends were able to find forgiveness on the cusp of an expected, but painful death.
All I can say is that July can’t come fast enough!
