I used to cringe when someone someone asked me to define my style because I never had a concrete answer. Similar to how I interact with people, I view clothes through my mind’s eye to get an idea of how they’ll make me feel. Since I get dressed based on my mood, my style’s never fit into a neatly labeled box.
Some days I lean more into masculine, “streetwear” looks and other times I tap into my femininity. Then there’s the also the days I’d rather walk around in an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants while sprucing it up with some fashionable accessory. So, I guess the answer to the age-old question is:
It all depends.
Now, my go-to uniform? It’s incredibly simple and doesn’t involve a meticulous process: tank top/t-shirt & jeans. It’s one of the easiest bases to build upon and has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
Once I know which top & bottoms I’m going to wear, I start piecing together my accessories based on if I want to go for a casual look or something a little more eccentric.
Maybe it’s me getting older, but I feel more comfortable in outfits when I’m not worried about how my style will be perceived. I can’t give you anything more than what my mood dictates because it’ll never look right. Now that I think about it, I’m positive that’s the basis of personal style.
As long as it makes sense to you, it doesn’t really matter if you make it to someone’s mood board or curated example of what “true” style is. You’re allowed to wear whatever you want, whenever you want and that’s it.
How do you describe your style?
